The outlook for the domestic takaful business remains bright due to the limited number of takaful operators in the country and because almost 60% of the Malaysian population is still uninsured, industry players and analysts said.
Syarikat Takaful Malaysia Bhd (Takaful Malaysia) group managing director Datuk Hassan Kamil said with only eight takaful operators in the country and two more takaful licences to be issued by Bank Negara, there was plenty room for growth for takaful products.
In line with the positive outlook, Takaful Malaysia aims to increase its market share to more than 50% by aggressively growing its retail distribution capabilities.

Persatuan Wakil Jualan Proton Edar (PEDA) meminta kesemua pengedar kereta baru dan terpakai serta ejen insurans memboikot ahli Persatuan Insurans Am Malaysia (PIAM) dan menyokong penggunaan takaful (insurans Islam).
Pemangku Presidennya, Armin Baniaz Pahamin berkata, cadangan yang dikemukakan PIAM dan mendapat kelulusan Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) akan menghancurkan ekosistem industri automotif terutama rangkaian para pengedar kereta.
”Ini kerana komisen premium dan pembaharuan insurans kenderaan menyumbangkan lebih 20 peratus jumlah pendapatan bersih pengedar untuk satu kereta.
”Segmen insurans kenderaan penting bagi ekosistem automotif,” katanya dalam kenyataan dikeluarkan di sini hari ini.

Takaful Ikhlas Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of MNRB Holdings Bhd, is targeting RM2mil in premiums from its new product – Ikhlas Big Bike Takaful – in the financial year ending March 31, 2010.
President and chief executive officer Syed Moheeb Syed Kamarulzaman said the company had decided to target the product at big bike riders as there was renewed interest in biking in Malaysia following the economic crisis.
“Statistics from the Road Transport Department show there are about 9,000 big bikes in the country and we want to tap the market,’’ Syed Moheeb told a press conference after the product launch yesterday.
