Kurnia Asia Bhd has applied for a takaful licence and is awaiting the response from Bank Negara, said director of corporate planning/investor relations Dr James Tee.
Group chief financial officer and director Looi Kok Leong said the company had submitted the application last year.

The Government and insurance industry players will jointly set up a new company (newco) to solely undertake the proposed third-party bodily injury and death insurance scheme (TPBID).
Bank Negara financial sector development department director Abdul Rasheed Ghafur said the Finance Ministry would hold a majority stake in the newco and it would be mandatory for motor players to participate in its operations.
There are currently some 30-plus insurers, including takaful players, offering motor insurance in the country.

The outlook for the domestic takaful business remains bright due to the limited number of takaful operators in the country and because almost 60% of the Malaysian population is still uninsured, industry players and analysts said.
Syarikat Takaful Malaysia Bhd (Takaful Malaysia) group managing director Datuk Hassan Kamil said with only eight takaful operators in the country and two more takaful licences to be issued by Bank Negara, there was plenty room for growth for takaful products.
In line with the positive outlook, Takaful Malaysia aims to increase its market share to more than 50% by aggressively growing its retail distribution capabilities.
